The West Wing – Season 7 Wednesday, May 13 2009

Its been a long time coming, but I’m really sad its finished now.

Ever since I started making my way through the 7 seasons of The West Wing a year and a half ago, the one thing that’s kept me coming back for more is the writing on this show.

Its phenomenal. The sharp dialogue, characters, their relationships with each other, humour, interesting situations and conflicts. This show has the whole package.

The seventh season is no different. It packs a punch as we follow the last days of the Bartlett Administration as well as the campaign for the new President. The Texas dark horse for the Democrats, Matt Santos and the Republicans Arnie Vinnick battle it out to be the next president.

Meanwhile, the President’s daughter gets married which leads to some humourous situations. A main character dies which packs a huge punch as the actor died in real life, and you feel really emotional watching the funeral scenes.

But its not all doom and gloom, Matt Santos has some witty one liners and a very good sense of humour. President Bartlett is very series in this season, but sometimes finds the humour in a situation.

Josh is extremely overworked running the Santos campaign and Donna finds her feet this season and really grows as a character.

I think overall, this season was sad, funny and wonderful. I’m going to miss it, but it ended at the right time.

If i could give 20 out of 5 i would.

Excellent series over all.

5 out of 5 stars.

The West Wing – Complete Season 7 [DVD] [2001]

The West Wing – Season 6 Thursday, Apr 9 2009

This season has its really funny moments, which I think were missing from the 5th season. It focuses more on the race for the presidential candidates for the next election and what Bartlett is doing with his last year in office.

Leo has a heart attack, which is scary for everyone but he comes back a better person and far more positive and cheerful than we’ve ever seen him. Josh leaves his role as Deputy Chief of Staff to get Matt Santos, a Senator from Texas elected as President for the Democratic party against some pretty strong opposition.

Donna leaves Josh and gets a better job that gives her more career growth. CJ becomes Chief of Staff after Leo’s heart attack and takes time to settler into her new role.

Overall, a good season that’s kinda sad as its nearly the end of the Bartlett term and I’m sad because only one more season and the ride’s over.

5 out of 5 stars.

The West Wing – Season 5 Tuesday, Mar 31 2009

I’ve finished the 5th season, 2 more to go!

This season was an intense one. Zoey Bartlett, the president’s daughter was kidnapped in the 4th season finale. She’s brought home and has to face the public and her own demons during her recovery.

Bartlett appoints a very liberal and the first woman as Chief Justice, an unprecedented move. Donna asks Josh for more responsibility and job growth, which allows her to go on a CODEL mission to Gaza with Andy and Fitz, but which ends with her being involved in a car bombing in Gaza, and the death of Admiral Fitzwallace.

The President is told he’s taking too long to get to a resolution, that the American people need more done, but he takes Kate Harper, the new Deputy NSC Head’s advice to consider his options, which leads into Season 6.

Lockdown is an interesting episode, where members of the staff have to stay put during a biohazard scare, which means Toby and Will have to stay in a room, difficult since they’re not talking. Josh and Commander Harper are stuck together as are The President, Charlie and Debbie.

I liked this season, but it was a difficult one to get through, it flowed but it didn’t have the magic of earlier seasons. I think this is because Aaron Sorkin, the show’s creator left.

4 out of 5 stars.

The West Wing – Season 4 Thursday, Feb 12 2009

This fine series continues in good form as the 4th Series progresses. There are some new faces in Will Bailey and Joe Quincy who join the cast.

Sam resigns to run for Office but is ultimately unsuccessful. Toby and his ex-wife are having twins who are born near the end of the season.

Zoe is going to France with her new boyfriend after graduation and Amy Gardner becomes the new Chief of Staff for the First Lady.

The season finale ends with a surprising shock twist that leave the President and his family in jeopardy, and the President makes a difficult choice.

The fourth series was fantastic of this spectacular season! More plot twists and turns as ever along with the ever present humour that keeps it funny. Matthew Perry of Friends fame joins as Joe Quincy, the Associate Council’s Office’s newest recruit. It’s actually weird to see him acting normal and series rather than funny as he did in Friends.

All in all, a fantastic series and looking forward to Season 5!

5 stars out of 5.

The West Wing – Complete Season 4

The West Wing Season 3 Friday, Oct 17 2008

Season 2 ended with President Bartlett stating he was running for re-election, despite having MS. This season follows the aftermath as all the senior staff are put through their paces as the White House is investigated for covering up the President’s illness.

It contains the usual humour between Donna and Josh, but also has a fantastic supporting cast and story lines, such as the one regarding Qumar, the fictional country in the middle east. CJ gets death threats and an agent is sent to protect her, much to her chagrin. It continues as a very strong season with excellent writing.

My favourite of course is Martin Sheen as the by turns serious and also humorous President who must finally choose a successor for Mrs. Landigham, a year after her death. Charlie’s character has grown in leaps and bounds and is extremely confident and funny in his interactions with the President. Donna finally gets to step outside of her Assistant role as she represents the White House in North Dakota.

All the characters grow and change this season and its marvellous to watch.

5 out of 5 stars.

The West Wing : Complete Season 3

The West Wing Seasons 1 and 2 Monday, Jun 9 2008

The West Wing is an American political drama based around the presidency of Josiah Bartlett. It follows the staff at the West Wing as they deal with various political dilemmas and their personal lives.

The first season introduced us to the president and the staff and I think it was one of the most phenomenal ones yet.

The second one picks up moments from where the first one left off, after the President has been shot. It deals with the aftermath of the attack as well as the long term implications on Josh Lyman, Deputy Chief of Staff who was also shot. It also deals with the President’s disclosure of his MS, Multiple Sclerosis and how that affects his intentions to run for a second term.

I think the second season was even more fantastic than the first because we’re more familiar with the characters and the President’s illness brings about a new dilemma which forms the crux of the last half of the season.

The writing is what makes this series one of the best as well as the phenomenal acting of all the principal task as they deal with national and personal crises.

A drama well worth getting into!

5 stars!
