The West Wing – Season 5 Tuesday, Mar 31 2009

I’ve finished the 5th season, 2 more to go!

This season was an intense one. Zoey Bartlett, the president’s daughter was kidnapped in the 4th season finale. She’s brought home and has to face the public and her own demons during her recovery.

Bartlett appoints a very liberal and the first woman as Chief Justice, an unprecedented move. Donna asks Josh for more responsibility and job growth, which allows her to go on a CODEL mission to Gaza with Andy and Fitz, but which ends with her being involved in a car bombing in Gaza, and the death of Admiral Fitzwallace.

The President is told he’s taking too long to get to a resolution, that the American people need more done, but he takes Kate Harper, the new Deputy NSC Head’s advice to consider his options, which leads into Season 6.

Lockdown is an interesting episode, where members of the staff have to stay put during a biohazard scare, which means Toby and Will have to stay in a room, difficult since they’re not talking. Josh and Commander Harper are stuck together as are The President, Charlie and Debbie.

I liked this season, but it was a difficult one to get through, it flowed but it didn’t have the magic of earlier seasons. I think this is because Aaron Sorkin, the show’s creator left.

4 out of 5 stars.

The West Wing – Season 4 Thursday, Feb 12 2009

This fine series continues in good form as the 4th Series progresses. There are some new faces in Will Bailey and Joe Quincy who join the cast.

Sam resigns to run for Office but is ultimately unsuccessful. Toby and his ex-wife are having twins who are born near the end of the season.

Zoe is going to France with her new boyfriend after graduation and Amy Gardner becomes the new Chief of Staff for the First Lady.

The season finale ends with a surprising shock twist that leave the President and his family in jeopardy, and the President makes a difficult choice.

The fourth series was fantastic of this spectacular season! More plot twists and turns as ever along with the ever present humour that keeps it funny. Matthew Perry of Friends fame joins as Joe Quincy, the Associate Council’s Office’s newest recruit. It’s actually weird to see him acting normal and series rather than funny as he did in Friends.

All in all, a fantastic series and looking forward to Season 5!

The West Wing – Complete Season 4

The West Wing Season 3 Friday, Oct 17 2008

Season 2 ended with President Bartlett stating he was running for re-election, despite having MS. This season follows the aftermath as all the senior staff are put through their paces as the White House is investigated for covering up the President’s illness.

It contains the usual humour between Donna and Josh, but also has a fantastic supporting cast and story lines, such as the one regarding Qumar, the fictional country in the middle east. CJ gets death threats and an agent is sent to protect her, much to her chagrin. It continues as a very strong season with excellent writing.

My favourite of course is Martin Sheen as the by turns serious and also humorous President who must finally choose a successor for Mrs. Landigham, a year after her death. Charlie’s character has grown in leaps and bounds and is extremely confident and funny in his interactions with the President. Donna finally gets to step outside of her Assistant role as she represents the White House in North Dakota.

All the characters grow and change this season and its marvellous to watch.

5 out of 5 stars.

The West Wing : Complete Season 3

The West Wing Seasons 1 and 2 Monday, Jun 9 2008

The West Wing is an American political drama based around the presidency of Josiah Bartlett. It follows the staff at the West Wing as they deal with various political dilemmas and their personal lives.

The first season introduced us to the president and the staff and I think it was one of the most phenomenal ones yet.

The second one picks up moments from where the first one left off, after the President has been shot. It deals with the aftermath of the attack as well as the long term implications on Josh Lyman, Deputy Chief of Staff who was also shot. It also deals with the President’s disclosure of his MS, Multiple Sclerosis and how that affects his intentions to run for a second term.

I think the second season was even more fantastic than the first because we’re more familiar with the characters and the President’s illness brings about a new dilemma which forms the crux of the last half of the season.

The writing is what makes this series one of the best as well as the phenomenal acting of all the principal task as they deal with national and personal crises.

A drama well worth getting into!

5 stars!
