Commander in Chief follows the presidency of Mackenzie Allan, the first female US President. When the serving president dies while in office, his Vice President, becomes the leader of the United States. Mac has to balance her new responsibilities with her family and serving the interests of her country in this fascinating but short lived series.

It seems I’m destined to fall in love with TV Shows that get cancelled, but this was a phenomenal series. I’d heard about this, having idly looked for something in league of the writing of the West Wing. And whilst The West Wing is a grade above anything else out there, Commander in Chief is a must try for any die hard West Wing fans.

Its very different in that its more stylised and follows a female President as she asserts her authority over a male dominated Congress. But its fascinating to watch Mac go from being naive to the steely and confident woman we see at the end.

I didn’t like her family in this, especially the children who were very young and therefore where some of the conflict lay in balancing the family. They were annoying, but despite them, this series is worth watching.

You’ll see some faces from yesteryear such as Donald Sutherland in a remarkable turn as Nathan Templeton – Speaker of the House, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Dickie McDonald – Campaign Advisor to name a few. Also look out for Ana Ortiz’s (Ugly Betty’s Hilda) cameo as Isabelle Rios.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series and felt it played out well over the season. I wish there was more, but what you get is very enjoyable.

5 stars!
